Revolutionary Container Home Project Emerges in Edgewood, Eyes Record-Breaking Sale
In Edgewood, a unique project is currently underway, transforming shipping containers into a sprawling residential structure that's looking to make a record-breaking splash in the real estate market. For the past decade, homes crafted from repurposed shipping containers have been surfacing around Atlanta, from Dixie Hills in the Westside to Old Fourth Ward on the eastside, and even as far south as the suburbs.
However, this style of construction is still relatively unique.
The latest development to catch the spotlight is a house made from stacked, decommissioned steel containers, presently under construction in Edgewood. The goal of the project is to create an exceptional design (a notable feature being an external spiral staircase) that offers abundant living space—along with a substantial price tag.
Featuring five bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms within a 3,200 square foot space, the three-story property recently reached its maximum height. It's situated on a previously vacant lot at 240 Patterson Avenue, just a few blocks south of Memorial Drive and east of Moreland Avenue.
It hit the market in mid-June with an asking price of $1.2 million. If realized, this equates to an impressive $375 per square foot.
Currently, it is the most expensive home listing in Edgewood, surpassing the next in line by $250,000. If it sells for the asking price, it would set a new record for single-family sales in the neighborhood, as per listing services. The current record is held by a contemporary house built in 2009 on Mayson Avenue, one of eastside Atlanta's earliest modern homes of the century. It sold for a solid $1 million in May, which was $100,000 above the asking price.
Despite the container-based home having fewer bedrooms and bathrooms, it offers over 1,000 square feet of additional space compared to the current record holder.
Advocates argue that compared to traditional houses, container homes are more robust, environmentally-friendly, and in some instances, relatively cheaper. The Edgewood property, listed as a "luxury" home, features four balconies, oversized windows, and an in-law suite adjacent to the two-car garage. According to the listing, the property boasts smart technology, including smart lights, thermostat, alarm system, garage door, and doorbells.
In early 2021, records show that the lot was purchased for $85,000.
