The Midtown Alliance is on a mission to revamp nine blocks of Atlanta’s iconic Peachtree Street, aiming to reduce its dependency on car traffic and make it more welcoming to residents and visitors alike. This ambitious project is now gathering momentum as more residents move into the rapidly evolving area.

The Peachtree Visioning Plan, as it is named, has been recently announced by Midtown Alliance. The plan is geared towards reshaping Peachtree Street from North Avenue up to 10th Street, making it less car-dependent as the region becomes increasingly populated.

The Alliance has engaged the expertise of global design firm Snøhetta and engineering company Kimley-Horn for this initiative. Snøhetta is renowned for its work on New York City's Broadway, where they successfully converted a portion of the thoroughfare into a pedestrian-friendly zone near Times Square.

The project aims to establish a fresh design approach for a portion of Peachtree Street, which houses landmarks such as The Georgian Terrace Hotel and the Fox Theatre, along with a cluster of new apartment skyscrapers and developing projects like Society Atlanta. The visioning process, as explained by Midtown Alliance, will explore the potentials of the current underutilized streets and pavements, envisioning a more habitable street that nurtures a thriving community by striking a balance between vehicular spaces and people-oriented areas.

Results from the 2022 Midtown Community Survey, shared by the Midtown Alliance, indicated the changes the community desires for Peachtree Street. The top five responses from over 3,500 respondents were: reduce speed (47%); establish bike lanes (46%); broaden sidewalks (41%); create more parklets/urbanism projects (36%); and introduce loading zones (34%). A recent interview with Solomon Caviness, head of the Atlanta Department of Transportation, was also mentioned, in which he hinted at the possible return of the popular Atlanta Streets Alive events on Peachtree this autumn.

The Peachtree Visioning Plan is still in its early stages, but a phase dedicated to community involvement is in the pipeline. It will involve presenting proposed concepts, evaluating current conditions, and collecting feedback that could help shape designs.

Once the final design recommendations are agreed upon, they will be incorporated into a subsequent implementation plan. The Midtown Alliance and the City of Atlanta will then use this to prioritize tasks and identify potential sources of funding. More information about how to participate in the visioning process, along with other relevant details, will be made available in the upcoming months.
