End of an Era: Sir Elton John Says Goodbye to the Stage and His Beloved Atlanta Home

On July 9, 2023, the streets of Stockholm, Sweden were buzzing as Sir Elton John took the stage for the last time, culminating his monumental 53-year musical career. The grand finale of his five-year farewell tour broke records with a whopping $931 million in earnings, making it the most financially successful tour in history. Simultaneously, thousands of miles away, a quieter but equally significant transition was unfolding: the emptying of Sir Elton John's longtime residence in Atlanta, Georgia.
Residents of the Park Place condo complex in Buckhead, Atlanta noted that it took almost a month for movers to carefully pack away and transport Sir Elton John's extensive collection of art and personal belongings. Spanning nearly 13,000 square feet, the musician's condo has been his sanctuary since 1991. Now, Sir Elton has officially left Buckhead, Atlanta, and his storied Park Place condo behind.
In a 1998 interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, John revealed why Atlanta held a special place in his heart. “I’ve always felt at home here," he said, crediting the warm reception he'd always received from the local community.
His connection with Atlanta began back in 1991, when he decided to sell his estate near Windsor, England. As he journeyed towards sobriety, he found Los Angeles too hectic and New York too daunting but was captivated by Atlanta's southern hospitality. Jim Henderson, the Park Place developer, remembers negotiating with Elton John's agent for the condo's price. Originally listed at $950,000, they settled at $925,000. By the time of the closing, Elton had already decided to purchase an adjoining unit, boosting the building's profile and ensuring its rapid sale.
Over the past three decades, Sir Elton John has been a pillar in the Buckhead and broader Atlanta communities. From frequenting local eateries like Umi Sushi and the now-closed Buckhead Diner to supporting the Braves, he was more than just a resident. His 2004 album “Peachtree Road” paid homage to the city, and he generously loaned pieces from his extensive art collection for display within the Park Place building.
During his final concert in Atlanta last year, John paid tribute to the city he's called home for 30 years. "I'll take you with me in my heart, in my soul, and I'll never forget you," he told the audience.
As his condo overlooking the junction of Peachtree Road and West Wesley Rd is likely to go on the market soon, both the music world and the Atlanta community say farewell to an icon who has left an indelible mark on both.
